Caroline is an IBCLC, Mindful Breastfeeding Practitioner and Baby Massage Instructor in Falkirk, Scotland. Caroline has been supporting families since 2012, supporting families on the National Breastfeeding Helpline, volunteering on hospital wards and running breastfeeding support groups. She also provides local support via phone/video call and online consultations. Caroline and the amazing charity ‘Maddie’s Miracle’ opened a much needed free drop in support group in Bo’ness in September last year, which has been very popular. Here are some of the amazing words spoken about the support Caroline and her groups have offered
Here’s what some of her nominations said:
“..I had a tough start with breast feeding but luckily some of the NICU
nurses had been really helpful, but when I got home I had zero support and the only thing the HV suggested was the group. It was the first time I ever attended a baby group and it really shaped my maternity leave in such a positive way, I have made friends for life there. Caroline is the most knowledgeable person about breastfeeding I have and will ever meet and she is so supportive. I barely missed the group for the whole of my maternity leave and in that time I have seen her support so many women. I do not think I would still be breastfeeding my daughter if it were not for that group, and I imagine so many other women who go are in the same position.”
“…After meeting with Caroline at breastfeeding group, she was quickly able to fill me with the confidence we needed and got me in all the right positions that worked for me and my baby and simply supporting one of my breats with my other hand made all the difference ( I was told at the clinic not todo that but use a muslin cloth instead which just didn’t work and I was lead to believe I wasn’t allowed to touch it with my other hand ) by 11 weeks we were completely away from using the nipple shields which I never thought possible! My daughter is now almost 11 months old and we are still going strong with breastfeeding. I really can’t thank Caroline enough for her support so that’s why I am nominating her for this award”
“I only came across the group, run by Caroline, when my daughter was around 8 weeks old. From day 1 I have found breastfeeding difficult and for the first 6 weeks painful. I wish I had known about the group, from day 1 Caroline corrected my technique for holding my daughter when feeding (which has been a game changer), and she was hands on (which is really what I needed, videos and someone telling you what to do isn’t enough). Caroline has put my mind at ease regarding lengths of feeds, nappy output etc and has just been the most supportive person. She is extremely knowledgeable and you can tell she has a real passion for her job and breastfeeding”
“We spoke with Caroline on zoom between Christmas and New year when lots of in person services were harder to access. It was a very vulnerable time 2 weeks postpartum and Caroline was very kind and supportive and explained things clearly to come up with a plan with me and help me work out what in person support I needed. I later attended in person sessions and received support.”
“I would like to nominate Caroline who supported me when baby turned one and was biting me. I was sadly considering stopping breast-feeding despite wanting to continue as the biting was so painful. Caroline gave me a free one hour consultation and the guidance and motherly nurturing and support changed my journey – the biting NEVER happened again and we’re still breastfeeding at almost 2.5 years old now. Caroline checked in with me and really uplifted me and boosted my confidence as a mother and parent.”
In November 2010, our chair Pam Lacey passed away. Pam had touched the lives of countless families but also encouraged many other women to train and go on to support others with her infectious humour, wisdom and determination.
Pam’s Prize was set up in her memory. It is a way to give recognition to the way volunteer breastfeeding counsellors make a difference to so many families in their time of need. We wanted to celebrate those who go the extra mile as Pam did.
