Breastfeeding Books

This is often reviewed in the baby catalogues as one of the most helpful books written on breastfeeding, and they're not wrong. If you don't get or read any other book on breastfeeding, make sure you read this one. It is very easy to follow, there are excellent photos and illustrations, and the section on the "myths" is very enlightening. Altogether an excellent read.

Another very good book, although this one has more photographic content and is less heavy on text. Nevertheless, it is very "mother-friendly", has some lovely photos, and some very useful sections such as the one on which drugs and medications are compatible with breastfeeding, and which are not. Again, some very common myths are exploded - helpful for the mum who has never breastfed before and is susceptible to being influenced by what others say!

The ABM highly recommends booklets published by the ABA, and this title is compiled from the information that goes into their booklets, from their Lactation Resource Centre and from the "vast breastfeeding experience of the 145,000 Australian women who are, or have been, Members of the ABA". This book talks clearly and concisely about all aspects of breastfeeding, correct positioning of the baby at the breast, common problems and what to do about them, how breastfeeding works, returning to work and expression and storage of breastmilk, and even extended breastfeeding....read more »

This is one of the most helpful books on Breastfeeding that we can recommend. To many, it is the breastfeeder's bible! The authors are both doctors with a special interest in the subject, and the book contains lots of very interesting information, and lots of very helpful advice.

The author is a certified lactation consultant in the United States and has contributed a lovely book to the "Idiot's" series. This is a light-hearted book about a serious subject, but it is very comprehensive and is mother-friendly because of its layout and presentation. Different chapters cover different aspects of breastfeeding (although the section on breastfeeding mothers' working right refers to the situation in the US, so is largely redundant in the UK), and it has lots of very useful information that I have not found in other books....read more »

I have only one word to describe this book - wonderful! If, like me, you are keen to learn about a more holistic and less clinical way to breastfeed, and want to find out about how you can use aromatherapy oils, homoeopathy, Bach flower remedies, and other natural remedies to aid you and your breastfeeding baby, look no further than this book. If you do buy this book, go to the chapter "Preparing for your Baby" and read the "Newborn's Ten Commandments to Parents" - it's beautiful....read more »

This is a lovely book, aimed of course at the parents of premature babies. There is a lot of very useful information on the difficulties surrounding premature babies, but the author manages to "de-mystify" the process of breastfeeding a premature baby very successfully, while presenting the strong case for the importance of giving breastmilk to the baby who arrived sooner than expected.

This book discusses the reasons for, and methods of, weaning your baby from the breast at various ages. It is full of practical tips and mothers' stories. This is one of the few books that explains how to go about drawing your breastfeeding relationship to a close.

By its title, it is obvious that this is aimed more at the mother who wishes to breastfeed on a long-term basis. When you do this, it is sometimes difficult to ignore the remarks and direct criticisms that seem to come from all quarters - "You're not STILL breastfeeding, are you?" This book provides encouragement and support, along with practical suggestions.

This is a good beginner's guide to breastfeeding, written by a former ABM breastfeeding counsellor. It covers the basics and is easy to read. Recommended if you want to buy a slimmer and slightly cheaper book.
